Overview

The civil engineering department was initially formed to complement OnSite's busy culvert cleaning department, providing small engineering solutions to the culverts we worked on.

However, the department has developed and is now capable of a variety of civil engineering works that is carried out by a small but skilled and dedicated workforce. We also have the ability to call upon other members of our group to provide further solutions and also other specialist contractors who provide us with additional resources when required.

The primary services the CE department are able to provide are:

Groundwork – For flexibility, all our operatives are ticketed to drive dumpers and mini excavators up to 10t but we do have the capability to drive excavators up to 20t if required. The department carries out general site clearance, topsoil strip and excavation for all types of foundations, footings, drainage, manhole chambers etc. We construct embankments and rebuild canal/river banks where necessary.

We carry out initial works for larger structures: bases, footings, small walls etc. and precast concrete elements like kerb lines and paving (block or slabs).

Drainage installation work includes manholes in brick, manhole sections in PCC or recycled plastic and pipelines of various types – plastic, clay, concrete etc. To complete the works we lay small areas of tarmac.

In-house we are also able to provide caissons or other deep shafts to provide works access.

River / Canal Works – Although we carry out penstock repairs and replacements in reservoirs and canals, our main area of work has been to the culverts that run beneath the waterways. Frequently, in conjunction with OnSite Portadam we replace the culvert, line it or carry out repairs to both culvert and the inlet/outlet headwalls. OnSite Portadam provides us with a dry, safe environment in which to carry out our works. As an added service our teams are able to clean watercourses and re-grade banks or towpaths.

In house we are able to offer a complete "No Dig" trenchless rehabilitation service that includes auger boring and pipe bursting (see Perco).

Brick / Block Structures – Construction of brick chambers, headwalls and walls. Our operatives have undergone specialist training allowing them to work on Heritage controlled sites and are able to work with lime mortar if required.

Fabrications - We are able to install various galvanised fabrications such as flooring, handrails, valves and penstocks.

Fencing - We install most types of fencing that we encounter whilst carrying out our works.
