Towpath Refurbishment

This towpath is frequently used both boat users and ramblers. However, after heavyrainfall it was prone to flooding and would quickly become a muddy morass due to the area being flat and the lack of natural drainage.

British Waterways designed a french drain with a series of outlets that crossed the towpath and outfalled through the piles into the canal.

Once the drainage was installed a new towpath was constructed. The adjacent soil was seeded and the result is a pleasing walk for boaters and ramblers alike.

This project was made more difficult as the towpath was some distance from the access point and all materials had to be transferred using a hopper. Additionally, the canal was particularly busy during that part of the summer.
