Overview

Working in the sewerage industry, OnSite is accustomed to dealing with environmental hazards and our entire operation is designed to enable us to work effectively but safely, with a positive impact on the environment. The work that we do, in the UK and worldwide, contributes to providing a cleaner and safer sewerage infrastructure for our clients and their customers, the general public.

In the Severn Trent region, OnSite are contracted to deal with pollution and flooding events, ensuring that the affected areas are cleaned up quickly and effectively, with minimal impact on the environment. For our sewer cleaning activities, we have invested in a Kaiser Whale recycling machine, which recycles the water during the cleaning operation, making it more efficient and effective as a sewer cleansing machine as well as being more environmentally friendly than traditional jetters.

We also have two products designed specifically with environmental protection in mind: our OnSite Live platform, in conjunction with the OS series of flow monitors, can monitor water levels in watercourses in realtime and alert that a flood may be imminent before it occurs, enabling a proactive and timely response.

The Portadam® portable dam system is a fast and cost-effective means to isolate a section of a water course for maintenance. Portadam® has a proven track record in enabling repairs to canals, aqueducts and suchlike where effective maintenance had previously been impossible. This has enabled our clients to effectively mitigate the risk of flooding at sites with a long history of problems.

Office processes

OnSite is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and our office processes are routinely revised to ensure efficiency and minimise waste. We actively encourage our clients to accept paperless reporting, and our IT department has recently introduced a number of initiatives in order to improve our impact on the environment:

  • Over 50 printers, scanners, photocopiers and faxes replaced with a centralised printing pool using 5 energy-efficient multi-function devices
  • Scan-to-email actively encouraged in place of photocopying
  • Incoming faxes distributed via email, not printed
  • Citrix implementation allowing staff to work remotely, cutting fuel consumption

ISO 14001

ISO 14001 is an internationally accepted standard for an Environmental Management System (EMS). The standard is designed to address the delicate balance between maintaining profitability and reducing environmental impact; with the commitment of your entire organization, it can enable you to achieve both objectives.

Environmental impact is becoming an increasingly important issue across the globe, with pressure to minimize that impact coming from a number of sources: local and national governments, regulators, trade associations, customers, employees and shareholders.

OnSite is aiming to be certified to ISO 14001:2004 by the end of 2010.
